The Man with the Big Hat

A few years back, Director Austin Sayre began production of The Man with the Big Hat, a documentary film about Steven Fromholz. Steven was a musician, singer-songwriter, actor, activist, river guide, and Poet Laureate of Texas. Steven was also a friend of mine: we had tried to make a film together in 2012 called Past Hondo, based on a screenplay we wrote together while I was deployed to Iraq in 2011. Sadly, Steven passed in early 2014. In 2019, director Austin Sayre reached out to me about the film and footage. We struck up a friendship. I am honored to be an executive producer for The Man with the Big Hat. Steven’s family, friends, and fans will be so happy with what Austin and crew have created. Thanks to all involved.

The Shawn Phillips Project

Nearly a decade in the making, Alex Wroten and Lindsay Wolfe-Wroten of Well Dang! Productions have been working on the definitive Shawn Phillips documentary series, following the life and over 60 year career of singer-songwriter Shawn Phillips; whose turbulent career in the music industry has taken him everywhere - from sold-out stadium tours worldwide and multi-record deals with major labels, to playing sparsely-attended venues and busking on the Santa Monica pier - and everywhere in-between.

Be on the lookout for this legendary guitar virtuoso and folk-rock icon, along with his upcoming docuseries. Shawn is a good friend, and as a life-long fan, I’m humbled to be involved as a producer with his documentary project.

PRODUCTION AND ACTING

Production:

In 2012, I founded Bracken Films, a film production company in Texas, to create an independent feature film called Past Hondo, based on a screenplay of the same name I co-wrote with Texas Poet Laureate Steven Fromholz. Production took place throughout 2012 in Austin, Gruene, San Antonio, Sabinal, Hondo, and Concan, Texas. The film was left unfinished prior to the death of Steven Fromholz in January 2014.

Then produced several music videos for Washington, D.C. area band Exit Vehicles. Collaborated with D.C.-based filmmaker Justin Feltman and Baltimore-based artist Jackson Berger on the live-action "Paint" music video, D.C.-based Bolivian editor and filmmaker Luis Velarde on the "Millennial" music video, and Michigan-based animator Matt Rasch on two animated music videos for "Marfa" and "Module."

Currently I'm a Louisville-based independent producer and funder, helping with documentary and narrative features, along with some music projects.

Acting:

Acted in several different mediums over the years, from college plays at Trinity University in San Antonio, to student films at the University of Texas in Austin; from commercial ad work in San Antonio, to stage theatre at Wheaton Drama in Chicago; and Kentucky Shakespeare "Shakespeare With Veterans" ensemble. Most recent work was in a small role in Gus Van Sant's "Dead Man's Wire" shot in Kentucky, which starred Bill Skarsgard, Colman Domingo, Cary Elwes, and Al Pacino. The film will premiere at the 2025 Venice and Toronto film festivals.
